Everyone knows that 9-1-1 is the telephone number to dial if you have an emergency and need the police, fire department or an ambulance. But did you know that there are other three-digit numbers you can dial to get other types of assistance? They are listed below.

  • QUICK LINKS

    • 2-1-1
2-1-1 is used for social or community service assistance. The service is run by the Department of Social Services in Virginia in partnership with several community organizations. When you dial 2-1-1, a trained professional listens to your challenges and suggests sources of help using one of the largest databases of health and human services in Virginia (which also is available on the Social Services Web site). All referrals are confidential. This is a state service.
    • 3-1-1
3-1-1 has been reserved by the FCC for non-emergency police or municipal services. Implementation of 3-1-1 service is at the local level so the telephone number is not yet available statewide, but it is available in several communities including Hampton and Virginia Beach. While there are variations in how 3-1-1 is used in each jurisdiction, it generally is used to request local government services such as to report potholes, abandoned vehicles, etc. This is a local service. • 5-1-1
5-1-1 is used to obtain or report traffic information. Run by the Department of Transportation, 5-1-1 allows the caller to get up-to-the-minute traffic conditions for the major roadways throughout Virginia. The use of interactive voice response eliminates the need for callers to press buttons on their phone. Updates also are available on the Web. This is a state service.

6-1-1 is used as the number to call to report problems with your telephone service. This is a telephone company service.
    • 7-1-1
7-1-1 is used to reach the Virginia Telecommunications Relay Service, which translates text from a telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD) and voice (and vice versa). This service allows a hearing-impared person to call a hearing person and have a conversation through an operator. This is a state service.
    • 8-1-1
8-1-1 is the telephone number to reach Miss Utility. This is the service that you should call if you plan to dig to ensure that you will not hit any underground utilities. The professionals at Miss Utility will assess whether any utilities exist and, if necessary, will send out someone to actually mark the utilities before any digging begins. This is a state service.
