      The average college tuition and fee charges at four-year public institutions increased from $617 in 1976-77 to $5,836 in 2006-07, an 846 percent increase over 30 years, according to the College Board's 2006 report, "Trends in College Pricing." If this trend continues, average tuition and fee costs at four-year public institutions could nearly double by the time today's infants become college freshmen.
